"I follow them because it’s the right thing to do." A great article. But this says it all.

Thank you so much for this. Simple conversations at the dinner table, comfortable silence without devices are moments I miss most. A home device policy would greatly help.

"We have a house device policy because we value connection with the people we love and live with." I extended this policy to a homeschool co-op I organized: no phones for parents or students during the duration of the program. It was an adjustment for the adults, but allowed for deep conversations and relationship building that would not have been possible with constant screen devotions. Importantly, the students could take the device rule more seriously because their parents were following it as well (See my post on "Reclaiming your stolen focus - A Lenten fast with a tech twist").

Thanks for your work!

"Importantly, the students could take the device rule more seriously because their parents were following it as well." Yes. Important and well said. We talk about this frequently: We parents are role models. They will do what we do. I'm reminded of that saying "Don't worry that your kids don't listen...worry that they never stop watching you!"

Fully agree! That is why I focused my recent post on the need for parents to set the standard. Children are our mirrors, and they can smell hypocrisy keener than freshly baked cookies. https://schooloftheunconformed.substack.com/p/reclaiming-your-stolen-focus
